About wifi.live

wifi.live is a crowdsourced, real-time map of WiFi performance around the world.

Anyone can run a WIFI speed test and instantly see the result appear on the global map — so travelers, remote workers, and digital nomads know what actually works right now. Just live internet performance, shared openly.

Why it exists

Too many people lose hours bouncing between cafes, coworking spaces, and hostels trying to find usable internet.

If someone ran a test 10 minutes ago, you'll see it. If no one has tested a place yet, you'll know that too.

How it works

• • Speed tests are run directly from your device
• • Each test is tagged to a real-world place (cafe, coworking, hotel, etc.)
• • Results appear instantly on the map in real-time
• • Click any place to see speeds and get directions via Google Maps

How the speed test works

Our speed test measures real-world performance to cloud infrastructure:

• • Download — measured from Cloudflare's global CDN (nearest edge server)
• • Upload — measured to Vercel's global edge network
• • Latency — round-trip time to the nearest server

This tests actual cloud performance — what matters for video calls, file uploads, and remote work — not just raw ISP speed.

Smart averaging

We use weighted averaging so recent tests matter more than old ones:

• • Tests from the last 30 days — 100% weight
• • Tests from 1-3 months ago — 50% weight
• • Tests older than 3 months — 25% weight

This keeps the map accurate and reflects current conditions, not outdated data.

Freshness indicators

Places tested recently are highlighted with a subtle glow. You'll also see freshness labels:

• • Today — tested within 24 hours
• • This week — tested within 7 days
• • This month — tested within 30 days
• • Older — faded to indicate stale data

What we collect

• • Place coordinates and name
• • Download & upload speed (Mbps)
• • Place type (cafe, coworking, hotel, etc.)
• • Time of test
• • Optional: your name to credit first discovery

We do not require accounts to run tests, and we do not sell personal data.
